Annual leave
We offer a generous annual leave allowance, starting from 22 days rising to a maximum of 30 days. The specific entitlement will be determined by length of service and the grade of the job and is in addition to the eight national bank holidays.
Hours of work
Unless otherwise stated on the advertisement, all appointments are based on a 37-hour working week (Monday to Friday). In addition, a flexi-time scheme is in operation. The flexible hours are between 8.00 am – 9.30 am, and 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm.
Salary scales and increments
The prescribed salary range has been determined by the GLPC Job Evaluation scheme. Progression through the pay scale is by means of annual increments. Salary scales are reviewed nationally each April.
Payment of Salary
Employees are paid by the 25th day of each month by credit transfer.
Pension scheme
The Council operates under the Local Government Superannuation Scheme, administered by Dorset County Council. This is a contributory pension scheme whereby the employee contribution is a percentage of the individual salary. Full details of this scheme will be provided to the successful candidate.
Alternatively new employees may wish to take out a Personal Pension or contribute to the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme.

Childcare voucher scheme
We offer a childcare voucher scheme to all employees. This provides the opportunity to exchange up to £243 of salary per calendar month for childcare vouchers. You will not pay any tax or National Insurance on this amount which will achieve a saving of up to £99 per month on your childcare costs - that's £1195 per year.
Cycle to work scheme
The Council operates a cycle to work scheme. This enables employees to achieve savings on the cost of hiring a bicycle and accessories to use for cycling to work and leisure activities.
Car parking
Free parking is provided.
Business travel
Employees will be expected to use the pool car, subject to availability, for any travelling undertaken on behalf of the Council. If your own car is used you will be eligible to claim a mileage rate under the North Dorset District Council’s travel scheme.
Car loans
Essential car users are eligible to apply for a loan re the assisted purchase of a car.
Health and safety
The council aims to ensure a safe working environment for all its employees through the implementation and monitoring of its health and safety policy and procedures and provides training and guidance re safe working practices.
VDU eye tests
Staff who use a visual display unit (VDU) screen for a substantial part of their working day (this will usually be for four hours or more) will be eligible to receive a 100% reimbursement of cost in respect of undertaking an eye test.
Employee Assistance Scheme
Available to all employees who require support with a wide range of personal or work related problems.
Professional membership fees
Staff may be eligible for reimbursement of the professional membership fees.
Trade union membership
The council fully supports the principle of collective bargaining and believes in solving industrial relations issues by discussion and agreement. All employees are encouraged to be a member of a trade union although the council equally supports the individual right of choice in such matters.
Staff subsidies for Blandford Leisure Centre
All staff are eligible for the subsidised use of the council's Blandford Leisure Centre
Conditions of service
The pay and Conditions of Service are laid down by the National Joint Council for Local Government Services (NJC). They may be amended by Local Agreement.
Place of work
The Council's main offices are based at Nordon, Salisbury Road, Blandford. If the post you are applying for is based at another location, this will be stated on the job advertisement.
Local Government Sickness scheme
The Council operates a sickness scheme.
Probationary period
The first six months of employment is a probationary period, during which time your suitability for the position to which you have been appointed will be assessed. The Council reserves the right to extend your probationary period, if in its opinion, circumstances so require.
Normal retirement age
At North Dorset District Council our normal retirement age is 65. Employees do however have the right to request to continue working beyond this age.
Smoking
The Council has a policy of no smoking within its offices and Blandford Leisure Centre and Depots.
